Engr. Eric Atta-Sonno, F.PE.IET(GH), I.CIOB, M.GIOC.

He is a Professional Engineer belonging to the Construction, Building and Civil Engineering Division of IET. He holds undergraduate qualifications in Engineering and Building Technology as well as post-graduate qualification in Real Estate, Construction and Affordable Housing. He also has certificates in Advanced Facilities Management; Project Management; Mortgage Portfolio Management; and Maintenance Management among others.

Engr. Eric Atta-Sonno began his post-qualification working life with a brief stint with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust in 1999 from where he worked for a year and half with the Real Estate Department of the Volta River Authority. He then worked with Enviro-Techno Consult for four years as a Project Officer undertaking various projects in the building and mechanical services, waste management, water engineering and related services. Between 2004 and 2008, Engr. Eric Atta-Sonno was the Technical Officer responsible for developing innovative house designs that were to be built using locally-available building materials, as well as training teams of artisans on the appropriate construction technology, etc. Since 2008, he has been engaged in various projects in the country including new construction, refurbishment of existing facilities, maintenance and estate management functions in various capacities.

Eng. Eric Atta-Sonno played key role in the UESP/IDA School Sanitation and UNCHS/HABITAT projects on Management of Water for African Cities piloted at the University of Ghana-Legon between 2001 and 2004; was a Member of the Design Team for the development of the National Cocoa Housing Project in 2005 and a Member of a panel tasked by Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment and other partners including UN-Habitat to design a project for the Slum Upgrading Project in Ghana with Tulaku as a pilot project from 2005 to 2008.

Engr. Atta-Sonno has two published researched works on failures of concrete roof structures as well as the utilization of locally-available building materials in the elimination of the national housing deficit. He has developed four technical manuals which have received the approval of the Habitat for Humanity programme Africa/Middle East Regional Office for usage by its Ghana programme at different levels. Engr. Atta-Sonno also has twelve unpublished works on subjects across various areas of life.

He first joined the Institution of Engineering and Technology in the year 2000 and has since served in various capacities as follows: Publications Committee (2005-2006), Education & Training Committee (2006-2008), Vice-Chairman of the Southern Sector (2011-2013), Vice-Chairman of the IIE 25th Anniversary Presidential Ball Planning Committee (2012), Council Member (2012-2014), Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee (2013), and developed the IET Staff Conditions of Service (2013). Earlier in 2016, Engr. Atta-Sonno was inducted as a Fellow of the institution. He was subsequently elected President-in-Waiting and served in that capacity in 2017 before assuming the Presidency in January 2018 with a two-year mandate.

Engr. Eric Atta-Sonno is a devout Christian currently fellowshipping with The Church of Pentecost International Worship Centre-Atomic where he is an Elder and a key member of its Estate Committee. He is also the Executive Director of Generational Impact Platform (GiP) and Secretary for the St. Augustine’s Past Students’ Union (APSU) worldwide.

In addition to the IET, Engr. Eric Atta-Sonno also holds membership of the Ghana Institute of Construction (GIOC) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). He is married to Gloria with two children.
