The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), has praised the management of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) for its bold decision to revive the refinery using the expertise of local engineers and technologists.
The commendation came from Henry Kwadwo Boateng, President of IET-GH, during a working visit to assess the progress of TOR’s ongoing rehabilitation works. He applauded the refinery’s reliance on Ghanaian professionals, describing it as a strong demonstration of the country’s engineering capabilities.
Mr. Boateng urged IET-GH members involved in the project to remain committed, disciplined, and professional in their work. He also encouraged TOR staff to support management’s vision and align themselves with the Reset Agenda, rather than engaging in actions that could disrupt progress.
Expressing confidence in the refinery’s revival, Mr. Boateng stated that TOR’s expected restart in November would not only restore national confidence in Ghana’s engineering excellence but also significantly contribute to the country’s industrial development.
Welcoming the IET-GH delegation, Managing Director Edmond Kombat expressed appreciation for the Institution’s support and noted that the majority of rehabilitation works were being executed by local engineers. He reaffirmed TOR’s commitment to partnering with IET-GH to enhance professional certification and training, in line with the President’s Reset Agenda, which emphasizes economic recovery and job creation.
Mr. Kombat further revealed plans to introduce a structured training programme for engineering students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), and other technical universities.
As part of broader capacity-building efforts, TOR is also exploring a partnership with Middle Eastern refineries to train about 5,000 Ghanaian engineers in the coming year.
The President-elect of IET-GH, Wonder Davor, commended TOR’s leadership for its strategic foresight, while Dr. Miriam Eduful encouraged staff to maintain high safety standards and ensure proper use of protective gear.
During a facility tour led by Abraham Quayson, the IET-GH team inspected major installations, including the Crude Oil Distillation Unit and Reforming Unit. TOR engineers recently completed complex refractory works—previously handled by expatriates—resulting in substantial foreign exchange savings for the nation.
