Professional Engineer

The Professional Engineer / Professional Engineering Technologist is an engineer who is registered or licensed by the Engineering Council in that category to offer professional engineering services to the public in the field for which they are registered, to the limitation prescribed by the Board of the Engineering Council.

Responsibility of a Professional Engineering Technologist

  1. The Professional Engineering Technologist develops solutions to engineering problems in their areas of specialization. They work in support of and under the technical direction of professional engineers.
  2. In areas of engineering where they are sufficiently knowledgeable, they may be permitted to take technical responsibility for systems with significant risks and also sign and stamp engineering documents, within the limits prescribed by the Board of the Engineering Council.

Responsibility of a Professional Engineer

  1. The Professional Engineer develops solutions to engineering problems using acquired knowledge, extensive experience, skills, innovation, and creativity.
  2. They take technical responsibility for complex systems with significant levels of risk.
  3. They have the authority to sign and stamp engineering works, thus taking legal responsibility for them.

Code of Ethics for Professional Engineering Practitioners

  1. Ethics is defined as a moral philosophy or code of morals practiced by a person or group of people — for example, the code of conduct set by a business, association, or institution like IET-GH.
  2. Engineers must perform under a standard of professional behavior that requires adherence to the highest principles of ethical conduct. In fulfilling their professional duties, engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public and perform services only in areas of their competence.
  3. We need to be ethical because it defines who we are individually and as a society. These are norms of behavior that everyone should follow.

Qualification Requirements

Register As Qualification
Professional Engineer
  • BSc (Eng), MSc (Eng), M.Eng, BTec (Eng), MTech (Eng), P.Dip (Eng), PhD (Eng), Doc (Eng) accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) or its equivalent approved for the purpose by the Council.
  • At least 3 years of post-qualification engineering experience.
Professional Engineering Technologist
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering accredited by NAB or equivalent; or EET III, MET III, CTC III, or Full Technological Certificate (FTC).
  • At least 3 years of post-qualification engineering experience.
Engineering Technician
  • National Certificate 2 (NC2) per COTVET Regulations, 2012 (LI 2195) or equivalent; or EET I/II, MET I/II, or CTC I/II.
  • At least 3 years of post-qualification engineering experience.
Engineering Craftsman
  • Non-formally: NVTI Trade Test Grade I (NVTI 1) or NVTI Proficiency Cert. 2 (NVPC 2) in Engineering.
  • Formally trained: NVTI Cert 2 or National Proficiency Certificate 2 (NPC 2) per COTVET Regulations, 2012 (LI 2195).
  • At least 3 years of post-qualification engineering experience.

Confirmed Professional Engineers and Professional Engineering Technologists are entitled to use the prefix Engr before their names. Student members at engineering-based institutions are registered and prepared for membership upon completion of their programmes.
