Engr. Professor Mike Agbesi Acheampong is a Professor of Environmental Chemical Engineering. He has been a Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department at the Kumasi Technical University,
Ghana, since August 2019. He is the first to become a Professor at the University. Engr. Professor Mike Agbesi Acheampong was born on 21 October 1969 in Kumasi, Ghana. He is an Environmental/Chemical Engineer by training and a Professor of Environmental Chemical Engineering. He has blended this background with expertise in Environmental Biotechnology. He obtained his B.Sc. (Chemical Engineering) and M.Sc. (Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation) degrees from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana, in 1996 and 2005, respectively. In October 2013, he obtained a joint PhD degree from the UNESCOIHE Institute for Water Education and the Wageningen University, The Netherlands.
Engr. Professor Acheampong worked for Unilever (Ghana) Limited (1996), Nestlé (Ghana) Limited (1997 – 1998), Premier Distribution Agency and Demax Investments (1998 – May 2003) before joining Kumasi Technical University (formerly Kumasi Polytechnic) in May 2003 as Senior Instructor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Through hard work and dedication to duty, he gained promotion to Lecturer and Senior Lecturer ranks in 2005 and 2011, respectively. He became an Associate Professor in 2014 and a Professor of Environmental Chemical Engineering in August 2019.
Engr. Professor Acheampong is an Environmental and Chemical Engineering Consultant. He is an expert on metallurgical wastewater treatment using sorption technology. He also has expertise in the area of Chemical Process Plant and Products Design, Industrial Safety, Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, Pollution Prevention and Control Techniques, Wastewater Quality Management, Freshwater Quality Management, Solid Waste Management, Water and Wastewater Treatment and Writing of Environmental Reports (Environmental Management Plan, Environmental Impact Statement and Environmental Impact Assessment). He is an advocate for Cleaner Production Technology for environmental sustainability.
Engr. Professor Acheampong is the former Pro Vice-Chancellor (Foundation Pro Vice-Chancellor) of the Kumasi Technical University in Ghana (2 September 2019 to 31 August 2022). Until he was appointed the substantive Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, he was the Interim Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Kumasi Technical University in Ghana. He acted as Rector/Vice-Chancellor of the University on several occasions. He was the Head of the Chemical Engineering department of Kumasi Polytechnic from September 2007 to February 2009 and from September 2014 to September 2015. In addition, Engr. Prof. Acheampong acted as Head of the Chemical Engineering department from June to August 2014.
Engr. Professor Acheampong is currently on a two-year Sabbatical Leave. Consequently, he became a Visiting Professor at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, Somanya, Ghana (1 October 2022 – 31 September 2024). He is an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Regional Maritime University in Ghana, and a Visiting Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the Madonna University in Nigeria. Again. Professor Acheampong is a Visiting Professor (Research) at the Durban University of Technology in South Africa. He was an Associate Professor at the Graduate School (Coventry University Masters Programme) at the Kumasi campus of Ghana Technology University College in Ghana. Prof. Acheampong is also an External Assessor to some local and foreign Universities.
Engr. Professor Acheampong’s teaching career spans over 20 years. His teaching areas (at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels) are Chemical Process Industries, Unit Operations in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering Process and Plant Design, Heat and Mass Transfer Operations, Environmental Technology, Safety and Pollution Control, Water and Wastewater Treatment Technology, Chemical Engineering Laboratory, Pollution Prevention and Control, Production Management, Chemical Process Plant design, Separation Processes, Sustainability and Environmental.
Management System Environmental Disaster Management, and Water and Climate Change. Engr. Professor Acheampong is an astute researcher and scholar. His research and scholarly work focus on chemical and environmental engineering disciplines. Specifically, he has researched chemical products development, water and wastewater treatment, sorption and biosorption of heavy metals, environmental biotechnology, environmental impact assessment of water and wastewater-related projects, water quality management, environmental monitoring and assessment, environmental sustainability, industrial health and safety. pollution prevention and control and solid management.
On collaborative research, he has worked with individual researchers in the relevant departments of many local and international academic institutions. Some of the Institutions are CSIR Water Research Institute in Ghana; the College of Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, KNUST in Ghana; the Department of Environmental Engineering and Water Technology, UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in The Netherlands; Department of Environmental Engineering and Management, Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand; Department of Biotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology in India; Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering, Universidade do Porto in Portugal and College of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, the University of South Florida in the USA.
Engr. Professor Acheampong has supervised and still supervising Bachelor, Master and Doctoral theses. He is an External Examiner of Master of Science and Doctoral Theses for some local and international Universities.
