Engr. John Bentoom is an esteemed member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana, holding the position of 1st Vice President and Southern Sector Chairman. His academic achievements include Mechanical Engineering Technicians’ Parts 1, 2, and 3 (Plant Option) as well as a Full Technological Certificate and Licentiateship in Mechanical Engineering from the City and Guilds of London Institute. He also possesses a Bachelor of Technology in Automobile Engineering and a Post Graduate Diploma. Engr. Bentoom has undergone various engineering training programs in Ghana and Japan, further enhancing his expertise.
His career in engineering commenced in 1976 as a Maintenance Technician at the Asutsuare Sugar Factory, and he subsequently joined the Ghana Highway Authority in 1980 as a Technician Engineer. Over the years, he progressed from Senior Technician Engineer to Chief Technician Engineer, assuming roles at different regional and zonal mechanical workshops across Ghana. Engr. Bentoom served as the Regional Mechanical Head in the Volta Region and the Zonal Workshop Manager in Tamale, responsible for workshops in Tamale, Bolgatanga, and Wa. He also held the positions of Project Mechanical Head for the Mobile Maintenance Unit (MMU) 1 in Techiman, Fleet Manager, and Acting Director of Plant and Equipment at the Ghana Highway Authority Head Office in Accra. After retiring from the Public Service in 2013, he worked with Silver Star Auto Limited as a Sales Representative and later as a Consultant on Commercial Vehicle Sales. Currently, Engr. John Bentoom operates a Motor Vehicle Diagnostic and Repair Workshop called Bowtech Engineering in Cape Coast.
Engr. John Bentoom became a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology in May 1992 and actively contributed to various committees. In 2015, he was elected as a Non-Office Holder, serving as the Regional Representative for the Central Region. He served on the Council for two terms, being re-elected for a second term in 2017. Since January 2020, he has been fulfilling his third term as the Chairman of the Southern Sector.
